Once considered an extreme niche activity, ultrarunning has soared in popularity during the last two decades. “I am so freaked out,” Katie Arnold, an ultrarunning champion and the author of the memoir, “Running Home,” said Monday. What happened in China was more akin to a mountaineering disaster, an avalanche, or what happened on Mount Everest in 1996, when a sudden storm killed eight climbers and stranded several others, including many amateur climbers. And last summer, the veteran ultrarunner Kim McCoy lost her leg when she was struck by a car while crossing a highway 70 miles from the finish line of a 340-mile race across the American South. Organizers found her after an eight-hour search but she died in the hospital, at age 33, the following day. Last year, Kateryna Katiuscheva of Ukraine, known as the “Iron Lady” of ultrarunning, collapsed six miles from the finish of a 42-mile trail race. Usually, tragedy strikes an ultrarace on a runner-by-runner basis. But the scale of the loss of life in Gansu Province was hard for even veterans of the growing sport to fathom. Tragedy is hardly a foreign concept in ultrarunning, races longer than the standard marathon distance of 26.2 miles. It’s great to be a part of this incredible Tribe.Ultrarunning has never experienced a day like Saturday, when 21 runners died as a storm descended on a high mountain pass during a 62-mile race in northwestern China. I’ve signed up for 3 more ultras this year, and can’t wait to toe the line for my first 100 miler in the future. What a wealth of information this podcast has been for me! I can’t thank you guys enough for what you do for this amazing sport. I finished my first 50k in just over 6 hours and couldn’t have been happier. Scott and Don and all their amazing guests more than prepared me for my first ultra. I was listening to about 10 TRN episodes a week during the last two months. Thankfully I stumbled upon TRN during my first week of training and became quite addicted. I selected a 50k that was two months away, signed up, and started to train immediately. After a quick internet search, and to my shock, I found a wealth of ultra races around me in Ohio. I’m 31 and have been a runner on and off for about 10 years now, but I’ve always wanted to get into endurance racing. I had never run a competitive race before this year, not even a 5k. Lack of any editing is an ongoing bit that would be funny, except it means you’re forced to listen to guests’ dogs barking and their car keys jingling and cars beeping and kids screaming in the background as they distractedly stutter and repeat themselves on air. One of the hosts constantly cuts off guests mid answer to interject his blathering and oft-repeated opinions. The most common guest interview platform is Skype, which frequently cuts out and adds to the volume issues. Turn the volume to max and you still can’t hear some guests, while some of the people talking will blow out your eardrums. Inconsistent volume levels between episodes and between different people talking in the same episodes. I almost bumped them up to 3 stars because of that alone, but decided to wait a few weeks first to make sure the program really has improved. I was pleasantly surprised to hear they dumped Skype. Update: fixed most of the sound quality issues.Īugust 2019 update: the Augpodcast was the first time I’ve listened since writing the original 1-star review a few months ago.
